چکیده

Biological visual systems are highly adapted to the image statistics of the natural world. A particularly important aspect of the statistics of natural scenes is the arrangements of edges they contain. Here, we examined how different arrangements of edges influence human perceptual saliency using a binocular rivalry paradigm. We constructed fields of randomly positioned Gabor patches with orientation arrangements containing co-oriented, co-circular and naturalistic structure. We rivalled these against arrangements with random orientations, which have higher entropy. Surprisingly, we found that fields with randomly oriented edges consistently dominated over the more ordered arrangements. These results suggest that visual scene entropy may be a key variable in early perceptual saliency.

Naturalistic Stimulus Structure Determines the Integration of Audiovisual Looming Signals in Binocular Rivalry

Rapid integration of biologically relevant information is crucial for the survival of an organism. Most prominently, humans should be biased to attend and respond to looming stimuli that signal approaching danger (e.g. predator) and hence require rapid action. This psychophysics study used binocular rivalry to investigate the perceptual advantage of looming (relative to receding) visual signals...

Configuration saliency revealed in short duration binocular rivalry

Supra-threshold spatial integration was studied by testing the saliency of multi-Gabor element configurations in short duration binocular rivalry (dichoptic masking) conditions. Dichoptic presentations allow for a competition between spatially overlapping supra-threshold stimuli that involve non-overlapping monocular receptive fields in the first stage of visual filtering. Different spatial con...

On the Role of Attention in Binocular Rivalry: Electrophysiological Evidence

During binocular rivalry visual consciousness fluctuates between two dissimilar monocular images. We investigated the role of attention in this phenomenon by comparing event-related potentials (ERPs) when binocular-rivalry stimuli were attended with when they were unattended. Stimuli were dichoptic, orthogonal gratings that yielded binocular rivalry and dioptic, identically oriented gratings th...

Congruent tactile stimulation reduces the strength of visual suppression during binocular rivalry

Presenting different images to each eye triggers 'binocular rivalry' in which one image is visible and the other suppressed, with the visible image alternating every second or so. We previously showed that binocular rivalry between cross-oriented gratings is altered when the fingertip explores a grooved stimulus aligned with one of the rivaling gratings: the matching visual grating's dominance ...

Psychophysical evidence for two routes to suppression before binocular summation of signals in human vision.

Visual mechanisms in primary visual cortex are suppressed by the superposition of gratings perpendicular to their preferred orientations. A clear picture of this process is needed to (i) inform functional architecture of image-processing models, (ii) identify the pathways available to support binocular rivalry, and (iii) generally advance our understanding of early vision. Here we use monoptic ...
